Frequently Asked Questions
What is hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is a planting process that uses a specially mixed slurry of seed, water, fertilizer, and mulch that’s sprayed evenly over bare soil. It’s a fast, cost-effective, and highly efficient way to establish grass. The mulch in the mixture helps retain moisture and protect the seed as it germinates, giving it a strong, healthy start.
How quickly will I see grass after hydroseeding?
Germination depends on the seed type and weather conditions.
Generally:
Ryegrass: 5–10 days
Fescue: 10–14 days
Bermuda: 14–21 days
Native grasses: 21–30+ days
With consistent watering and proper care, you’ll typically start to see growth within 7–14 days. A fully established lawn usually takes 6–12 weeks.
What do I need to do to prepare the soil?
Proper soil preparation is crucial for a successful hydroseeding job. Here are a few simple steps to take:
• Clear the area of rocks, weeds, debris, and any old grass.
• Grade and smooth the soil surface to prevent water pooling.
• Loosen the topsoil to a depth of 2–4 inches to improve root penetration.
• Add quality topsoil or compost if your existing soil is poor or compacted.
• Avoid pre-emergent herbicides or chemicals just before hydroseeding.

Is hydroseeding better than sod?
Yes—for large areas. It’s more affordable, easier to apply, and develops stronger root systems.
Can I hydroseed a sloped yard?
Absolutely. Hydroseeding is especially effective on slopes because the mulch helps prevent erosion while seeds take root.
When’s the best time to hydroseed in Alabama?
Spring and fall are ideal, but with proper watering, summer applications can thrive too.
Do I need to maintain the area after hydroseeding?
Yes. Regular watering is key for the first few weeks, and we’ll provide clear care instructions.
