How To Care For Your New Hydraulically Planted Area

Watering:
First 7-10 days:  Keep your new lawn moist at all times! Schedule – 3 to 4 times per day, everyday. This is the most critical step in the process. Key Point – frequent light watering week 1. Avoid puddling and runoff.

Week #2 Schedule – 1 to 2 times per day, everyday. Key Point – Begin to reduce frequency while increasing duration.

Week #3 Schedule – 1 time per day, 3 times per week. Key Point – you are nearing your 1st mowing begin to develop root mass and depth by watering heavy (again avoiding excessive runoff or puddling) on a Monday for instance, and not watering heavy again until Thursday. This forces the root system to “chase” the water down into the soil structure developing root length.

Week #4 Schedule – 1 time per day, 1 to 2 times per week. Key Point – During periods of summer “drought”, your lawn needs between .75” and 1.0” of water per week. Remember to consider the weather when watering. Cooler, overcast days will require less watering than on hot windy days. Turn your irrigation system off when it rains! Conserve our water resources! Consistent rainfall will eliminate the need to irrigate.

Fertilizing:
You will need to fertilize 4 weeks from the date of application. Use a good “turf builder” type fertilizer with iron and trace elements. Then fertilize your lawn on a seasonal schedule.

Rule of thumb: Fertilize four times a year.  Do not use weed and feed fertilizer for six months from date of application.

Mowing:
Mow your new lawn when it reaches a height of 3 inches. Make sure you mower blade is sharp!  It is always best not to cut more than one-third of the leaf at each mowing. This reduces plant stress and promotes healthy leaves. If weeds appear in your established lawn as a result of weed seed in you soil, weekly mowing for a month to a height of 1.5 inches should kill many of them. For stubborn weeds, use a hand tool or a selective herbicide. Always follow instructions for rates of application and product safety requirements.
